Strengthening Church Leaders in Kenya
In Kenya, IBL partners with Pastor Wilfred Githongo (see photo to the right) and NEO Kenya, to train a group of key, next-generation leaders among the Maasi and three other people groups in Kenya.
As in other majority world contexts, IBL’s training ministry focuses on theological essentials, biblical leadership, and pastoral ministry (with a particular focus on effective Bible study and preaching), all contextualized to the Kenyan students we are serving. We are in the midst of our first 5-year training program in Kenya. In each week-long segment we cover fourteen topics in each of these three key areas. The students in turn convey the material, which we present in English, to other non-English-speaking leaders in their native languages.
In each session we present practical truth from God’s Word in a discussion format, allowing for a strong focus on application and Q&A. Beyond the formal training sessions, God has allowed us to make many one-on-one investments, exhorting these leaders in their personal walks with Christ and encouraging them to embrace biblical leadership practices. God is greatly blessing our investment in the lives of these pastors and church leaders.
Even as we anticipate the celebration of our initial five years, we are also exploring a second phase of ministry with Wilfred in which we focus on leadership teams in a local church context. Our desire is to help Pastor Wilfred and his team as they establish a self-sustaining (Kenyans training Kenyans) program for pastors, evangelists, and church leaders.
